Echo Park Refugee Welcoming Center

The Welcoming Center at Echo Park has two primary goals. First, to work in solidarity with the newly arrived refugee/immigrant community in the greater Los Angeles area developing a hospitable community, providing essential resources, and empowering emerging community leaders. Second, to curate a faith collective that represents the diversity of Los Angeles, with particular attention focused on the vast population of younger individuals (ages 18-35) from all backgrounds. We are grateful to be doing this work on unceded Tongva land at Echo Park United Methodist Church. We are starting a new mentoring collective in 2022 for our newly arrived refugee/immigrant youth. The mentoring project will consist of 5 mentors and 5 mentees for a total of 10 participants. This endeavor will be led by Naylea Hernandez, our program coordinator, who is DACAmented and finishing her master’s degree in social work. She has a lot of great experience doing this type of work. The mentees will be high school aged youth. We will meet with them both online and in person during 2022. We are currently seeking support to buy 5 Chromebooks ($300/each) for the mentees of this program.
